UPP Leader asks Cabinet which taxes, exactly, have been removed from flour, since ABST has never been levied on it

The Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) is calling for clarification and also challenging the Gaston Browne Administration to prove that taxes on flour have, in fact, been eliminated.

According to this week’s Cabinet Notes, the Executive is reiterating that taxes on flour have been eliminated in order to keep bread at a very low and stable price.

However, Harold Lovell says he is not aware of the duty on flour being removed. Therefore, he is asking the Administration to say exactly which taxes have been eliminated from the commodity, given that it was never subject to the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST).
The last time he checked, Lovell says, the tariff on flour had been the same for weeks.

The Political Leader says a UPP Administration will remove the Customs duty on certain food items and lower the rate on others.

And he has asked the sitting administration, several times, to consider doing this to reduce the burden on residents during this difficult economic period.

Already, Lovell notes, rising prices have resulted in shrink-flation – a situation in which consumers are getting less of a product for the same or even more money.

In the meantime, the Cabinet Notes remind the public that “bread is a major contributor to NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases) when eaten in high quantities.”

Therefore, it is warning against the over-consumption of this food item.

  1. Lovell again you show your incompetence. Everyone can call the Custom Department and get that information. Secondly you are not the leader of the Opposition. Jamal Pringle is. And he alone can ask questions of the Prime Minister or any other Minister in Parliament. So give your questions to Jamal, he will ask them for you.
Democracy is not exercised in the media, but in Parliament.

  2. Prime Minister Mia Motley Friday announced that Barbados would be seeking a new loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this month, telling Barbadians “these are indeed rough waters”.

Yet in Antigua #HFWL is planning to remove and lower taxes and at the same time increase expenses. How would that economics work or is it all pie in the sky ideas to trick the electorate?

    • Last year in July, the failed ALP secretly borrowed 540 million at 4% interest from Reliance Partners.

Double the IMF loan amount, at 4 times the interest.

ALP cost the tax payers 8 times as much money as the IMF loan and we DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPEND TO THAT MONEY!!!

At least under Harold Lovell and Mia Mottley we know what happens with our money.

Who got any benefit from the 540 million ALP secret loan?

      No stimulus.

      No severance payments.

No big injection into Social Security as they promised.

No payment of debt to service providers.

      Whey de money garn?

ALP KNEW THEY WERE SCREWING OVER THE PEOPLE.

      That’s why they did not:
      1. announce the loan
      2. debate it in parliament.

      CROOKS!

    • @ Just Saying
Like the ‘pie in the sky’ promises by GASTON BROWN, like the 500 homes in 500 days which have not realised even 200 over nearly 10 years, the WATER IN 14 DAYS……..

I WOULD RATHER TAKE LOVELL’s promise ANY DAY THAN THE EMPTY FROM THE SKY MADE MY ABLP IN 2014?????
      YOU HYPOCRITES AND USEFUL IDIOT

      • Was Nigel Christian clean? How can a customs officer whecking two barrel and a box daily have over EC1.0M in his account?

Only you and GB should have money, from 0 to $30M, off the sweat of poor people back, with all the land flipping from Villa, to English Harbour, to Marble Hill, to Long Bay. God is not sleeping, you think people fooly, then increase from $30M to $300M overnight?
A fool and his riches will soon be parted, so take heed.
JUSTICE FOR NIGEL AND GET RID OF DEM, all nosy up in people’s business. WHAT A PRIME MINISTER.
