The annual Urlings Seafood Fest was staged at the Fisheries Complex on Sunday, August 13th.

Hundreds of families and friends came out to enjoy a relaxing day out, while sampling an abundance of seafood and the warm hospitality that is synonymous with the southern side of the island.

“I always enjoy the Seafood Fest and welcoming so many visitors to Urlings, the fishing capital of the island.

It’s also a way to meet the patrons and vendors and to celebrate the local fisher folk, farmers, chefs and entertainers and the economic benefits that can be generated when the community works together.

You could really feel the buzz and sense of community, and that’s what this event is all about, “ said UPP Candidate Kelvin “Shugy” Simon.

Held every year on the first Sunday after Carnival, the event attracts local, regional and international visitors and helps to stimulate the growth of the tourism industry and other business sectors.

It also spotlights the local music, heritage, arts and local crafts of the south.

Launched in 2009 by former MP and Minister of Fisheries, Hon. Hilson Baptiste, the Seafood Festival demonstrates due regard for Antigua and Barbuda’s fisheries resources and the marine environment.

The event was designed to empower the community, instill a sense of pride and unity and to encourage the general public to eat more seafood.

“The longevity of the Seafood Fest is a testament of the UPP’s strong, visionary and progressive leadership. We take pride in the South for producing the highest quality of seafood on island.

I thank the many patrons who came out to sample our seafood dishes, and for supporting our vendors. Every dollar spent at this event will go a long way in uplifting the community,” said Kelvin “Shugy” Simon, UPP Candidate for St. Mary’s South.

Meanwhile, the St. Mary’s South community is gearing up for the Piango Fest, formerly the Mango Fest.

It will be held next weekend, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th August at the Cades Bay Agricultural Station.
