Upgrades to ARG in Motion Ahead of 2025 Carnival Season
Renovations are planned for the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) in preparation for its transformation into Carnival City ahead of the 2025 carnival season.
Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst said the government will allocate funds to support improvements at the venue. “A sum of money is to be allotted to the commission for preparations for carnival 2025, which would include upgrades to the Antigua Recreation Grounds,” he said.
He confirmed that bathroom facilities and water access are a key part of the plans. “That means the repair of the bathrooms, ensuring that there is water at all times running in the faucets,” he said.
Mr Hurst also stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the field. “There is a drainage system under the grass, under the earthen field on which we will walk,” he said. “They don’t allow big trucks in there. They allow some cars to park there because the cars don’t seem to do very much harm.”
He warned that damage to the field could have lasting effects beyond the carnival period. “When it rains, as you know, they sometimes cause deep furrows in the soil. And it spoils it for recreation and sports after the carnival has ended,” he said.
The ARG is expected to host thousands of patrons during both daytime and nighttime events from early July through to the first Tuesday in August. Mr Hurst said the government wants to make the venue as welcoming as possible.
“We’re going to do our best to ensure that it is a place where people want to go… that is Carnival City… and that will be as attractive as it has been in years past, maybe even more attractive.”
