Union President Praises Government’s New Complex for Public Workers

President of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU), Bernard de Nully, has commended the government’s decision to build a new purpose-built government complex, calling it a meaningful step toward improving working conditions for public servants.

Speaking at the 74th Labour Day rally, de Nully said the union had been in ongoing dialogue with the government over health and safety concerns in several public sector buildings, and welcomed the administration’s move as a sign of progress.

“The government has heard the call and decided to build a complex purposely fit for these government departments which are being affected,” he announced to cheers from the crowd. “This is good, and it shows that the Antigua Trades and Labour Union is on the ball, and our government is fulfilling its part.”

The AT&LU president highlighted longstanding concerns over air quality, overcrowding, and structural deficiencies in some offices, and said the union had made specific recommendations including shorter workdays, remote work options, deep cleaning, and installation of ventilation systems.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who addressed the rally shortly after, also affirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring safe and modern workplaces, echoing the union’s focus on protecting workers’ health and dignity.

The new government complex is expected to house several departments currently located in aging or inadequate facilities. Construction timelines and funding details have yet to be formally announced.

The announcement was among several points of collaboration highlighted at this year’s Labour Day celebration, with both the AT&LU and government officials reiterating their commitment to the welfare of the working class in Antigua and Barbuda.
