The Resident British Commissioner, John Hamilton, has urged Antiguans and Barbudans to submit stronger applications for the Chevening Scholarship scheme.
Speaking at a recent event, Hamilton said alumni support was key to helping candidates improve.
“The honest answer is by getting more and better candidates – and that happens when people come together and help each other,” he said.
The UK-funded programme offers full scholarships for one-year master’s degrees at leading British universities. Applicants are selected for their leadership potential and commitment to positive change.
For 2025, Dr David Francis was the sole awardee from Antigua and Barbuda. He works as a House Officer in Internal Medicine at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and will study Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology at University College London.
Applications for the 2026 intake are now open until November at chevening.org. Hamilton encouraged prospective students not to be discouraged by rejection, stressing that unsuccessful candidates could strengthen their applications and reapply.

It used to be persons pursuing medical disciples were discouraged from applying. I hope that has changed. Epidemiology is a medical as well as public health discipline but I dont know if the high commission knows this. Also, after the word epidemiology got sexy after covid, maybe the high commission has just know learnt the meaning,
Anyway, I think things have improved from years ago and I am glad for that but please dont talk about stronger applications cause I know better.
