U.S. Calls on Governments to Reject Cuban Medical Missions Citing Forced Labor Abuses

3

US EMBASSY BRIDGETOWN: The United States is committed to holding accountable Cuban regime officials, foreign government officials, and others for facilitating forced labor in Cuba’s medical missions.

By participating in these programs, despite known human rights abuses, foreign governments become complicit in the regime’s tactics.

Their actions directly contribute to the abuses of Cuban workers.

There are alternative methods available for Caribbean nations to recruit foreign medical workers and ethically meet the healthcare needs of their people.
The United States calls on all governments and peoples to reject forced labor schemes and join us in demanding accountability and respect for human rights.

  1. The first paragraph of this press release makes it clear how the US feels about the Cuban Medical Mission and how they will treat with governments that are involved in the mission. We have already seen Antigua and Barbuda turning to Ghana in Africa under pressure, in order to replace the Cubans we had in the country and other Caribbean countries are doing the same, some even turning to the Philippines. All the while, there are conflicting stories about the fate of our students studying in Cuba. One thing for certain – they are now experiencing more hours without electricity than they are accustomed to at home, while the US continues to put pressure on Cuba and choke them for oil.

  2. Sorry, I will never agree that because the US says Cuba is carrying out forced labor by sending medical teams and help within the field of medicine without showing the receipts of that accusation that it is true. This is just another means of sanctions on the Cuban people. Yes, I said the Cuban people, for ultimately they are the ones feeling the heavy hand of the US keeping them down.
What is the US afraid of?
Sovereign nations must have the right of determining who they accept help from, provided that the help does not sabotage the very people giving it. But no, the US is adamant and their big stick attitude seems like if you, a sovereign nation, does not bow to my demands, to dehumanize the country that I hate, then you and your citizenry will likewise suffer. That is sick.
