Two women sentenced for stealing from stores on Redcliffe Street
SOURCE: ANTIGUA OBSERVER- A 30-year-old woman has been fined, and her 22-year-old co-accused has been placed on probation after admitting to stealing approximately $1,100 worth of merchandise from two Redcliffe Street stores, on February 26.
Tichelle James and Shania Knight admitted to entering two Chinese stores and taking multiple items, including six pairs of shoes, two pairs of shorts, six pairs of socks, a dress, a T-shirt, and various other clothing items.
The theft was discovered when a store owner noticed merchandise protruding from one of the women’s bags as they exited. The suspects were followed to Redcliffe Quay, where the stolen items were recovered before authorities were contacted.
Both women were charged for larceny when they appeared before Magistrate Dane Hamilton on Monday.
They were remanded to His Majesty’s Prison for one night and were brought back to court on Tuesday for sentencing.
During the sentencing, Magistrate Dane Hamilton inquired about their night in prison. James pleaded, “Please, I don’t want to go back.” Knight added, “Mosquito bite me no wah.”
The prosecutor suggested they should spend more time in prison to learn their lesson, but the women quickly begged the Magistrate not to do so.
Ultimately, James was sentenced to pay a fine of $500, considering the items were already returned and she had spent a night in prison. The younger defendant, Knight, was placed on probation for two years.
James had to pay the money forthwith or spend 14 days in prison.
