Police Statement on Incident in St. Johns

The police are investigating an incident that occurred in St. John’s City in which two police officers were injured and one man hospitalized nursing gunshot wounds.

On Thursday 31 August, 2023, about 1:00pm, police officers attached to Special Services Unit (SSU) responded to a report of wounding in the vicinity of the West Bus Station.

On arrival at the scene, the officers were confronted by a man armed with a knife and bottles. Attempts were made to subdue the man, during which he threw bottles at two officers injuring one to the head and the other to his chest.

The situation further escalated when the man advanced towards one officer with the knife. As a result, the man was shot. He fled the scene and was apprehended along South Street. EMS was contacted and the man was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

The injured officers were treated and discharged from the hospital.

The Criminal Investigations Department is continuing investigations into the incident, and the Police Administration is hoping for a speedy recovery of both officers and the injured man.

  1. We saw the video , the office felt shame cos he almost got his head bust and fired his weapon recklessly come on!!!

    • What an idiot you are, we want law an order and when the police care out their duties they are abused by idiots like you. Antigua needs the police to do their jobs. Too much crime! No other country would allow a person like to attack a police and get away with it! Go police do your jobs!

    • @ sad times. U should do yourself a favor and shut your mouth because you sound so stupid it is unbelievable. To All, we shouldn’t beat up on the police because they’re the ones we would call in a time of distress! Yes, police needs to weigh how they would respond especially dealing with a mental case but unless u guys are actually confronted in this situation, i suggest u shut your mouth!! Talk is cheap and action is a different ball game! If anyone to be blame it is the government for the lack of investments for dealing with special needs persons !! ….. yet they can afford to pay nearly $100k per week to Alfa nero!! This is what u get when u vote for an incompetent Government who can’t provide services for these institutions!

  2. I was on the scene,no officer was hurt….The guy did throw a bottle at him hitting him yes but there was not injuries or reason for the shots that was fired…. …JUSTICE FOR BRUCE!!!!!

  3. Guessing Antigua’s law enforcement never heard of Tasers or pepper spray?? Sounds like the entire force need to be requalified. Too many soft fraidy fraidy men carrying guns in my opinion.

  4. Some of u treat police like dogs the same police ah u expect to run come when ah u call them ,the guy was out of control plenty witnesses the police did their jobs

  5. All if us need to remember when a person is deemed “mentally unstable” any injury they inflict on you and you in turn retaliate, by law YOU will be charged!!!!.
Let the law take its course.
You sow to the wind you reap the whirlwind!!!! Too much drugs.
The father was on radio speaking to his son’s sunstsnce issues and the lack of facilities to assist him.
Our mental health facility is woefully lacking and the Government is in no hurry to address this issue.

  6. I support the police 100%. The crime rate in Antigua is too high. The government needs to give the police 100% immunity against being prosecuted.
