Two New Abattoirs to Be Operational Within 18 Months, PM Says

Two new abattoirs are expected to become operational within the next 12 to 18 months as part of the government’s effort to strengthen food supply infrastructure and support increased agricultural production, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Saturday.

Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne programme, Browne said equipment for the facilities has already been shipped and funding approved to begin civil works.

“The equipment for the abattoirs has been shipped,” Browne said, adding that once construction is completed, the facilities will significantly improve the country’s capacity to process locally produced livestock.

He said the investment is intended to support farmers as agricultural output expands, ensuring that increased production can be absorbed safely and efficiently.

Browne said civil works funding has been approved and construction is expected to move ahead shortly, with the timeline for completion estimated at between one year and 18 months.

“Within the next 12 to 18 months, we should see a significant increase in agricultural production,” he said, linking the abattoirs to broader efforts to reduce food insecurity.

The facilities form part of a wider agricultural expansion programme that includes the acquisition of heavy equipment, improved water storage and climate-adaptation measures such as night farming.

Browne said modernising food-processing infrastructure is critical to reducing reliance on imports while supporting local farmers and improving food safety standards.
