Two Minor Earthquakes Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda
The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI) has reported two minor earthquakes in the vicinity of Antigua and Barbuda on the morning of Sunday, January 12, 2025.
The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.5, was recorded at 8:12 a.m. local time (12:12 UTC). It occurred at a depth of 10 km at a location approximately 71 km northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, and 124 km northeast of Brades, Montserrat.
A second earthquake, slightly stronger with a magnitude of 3.6, was recorded at 8:36 a.m. local time (12:36 UTC). This tremor occurred at a similar depth of 10 km, with its epicenter 69 km northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, and 123 km northeast of Brades, Montserrat.
Both events were automatically detected and located using computer algorithms. The SRC has noted that these preliminary data are subject to revision upon further analysis by seismologists.
No reports of damage or injuries have been received. Residents in the affected regions are encouraged to remain informed and review earthquake preparedness guidelines.
