Two Earthquakes Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI, SRC) reported two earthquakes near Antigua and Barbuda on November 15, 2024, occurring within two hours of each other.
The quakes, measuring magnitudes of 5.0 and 4.0, struck at shallow depths, prompting reports of tremors across the region.
The first earthquake occurred at 5:11 PM local time (21:11 UTC) with a magnitude of 5.0. It was recorded at a depth of 15 kilometers, with the epicenter located at latitude 17.61N and longitude 61.64W.
The tremor was situated approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, 110 kilometers northeast of Brades, Montserrat, and 126 kilometers east-northeast of Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The second earthquake followed at 6:32 PM local time (22:32 UTC) with a magnitude of 4.0. It struck at a depth of 14 kilometers, with the epicenter at latitude 17.58N and longitude 61.68W.
This tremor was located about 55 kilometers north-northeast of Saint John’s, 105 kilometers northeast of Brades, and 121 kilometers east-northeast of Basseterre.
Both events occurred at shallow depths, increasing the likelihood of the tremors being felt at the surface. Preliminary assessments suggest no major damage, though residents in Antigua and Barbuda and neighboring islands reported mild to moderate shaking.
The UWI, SRC noted that these findings are preliminary and may be revised following further analysis. Residents are encouraged to report any observed impacts or damage to assist in refining the assessment.
Authorities have reminded the public to stay vigilant and review earthquake preparedness plans, as the region lies in a seismically active zone.
