Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister for Social and Urban Transformation, Rawdon Turner, has called for frank dialogue and joint action to tackle what he described as ongoing urban decay in the capital, St John’s.
Speaking at the first public consultation on the city’s redevelopment at the John E. St. Luce Conference Centre, Mr Turner told property owners, business operators and residents that revitalisation would require commitment from both the government and the private sector.
He highlighted deteriorating infrastructure and building conditions, pointing to neglected façades along High Street and Market Street and former commercial properties now in disrepair. Mr Turner criticised landlords who continue to collect rent without maintaining their buildings, questioning why basic upkeep such as painting is not prioritised.
The minister also acknowledged challenges facing the government, including damaged sidewalks, vending concerns and the need for wider infrastructure upgrades.
He said St John’s could be restored if stakeholders were willing to engage honestly and work together, adding that the time for action was now.
The consultation, organised by the St John’s Development Corporation under the theme “Your City. Your Voice,” is aimed at gathering public input on issues such as city aesthetics, waste management, drainage and the removal of derelict buildings.
