A tropical wave near the Windward Islands is bringing widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds to parts of the eastern Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

In its latest advisory issued at 8 a.m. on Sunday, the NHC said the system, identified as AL98, is moving quickly westward at around 20 to 25 mph into the eastern Caribbean Sea. Forecasters expect the unsettled weather to continue through Monday morning, with heavy rainfall and gusty winds affecting portions of the Windward and Leeward Islands.

While additional development is expected to be limited over the next couple of days due to the system’s rapid movement, meteorologists anticipate that conditions could become more favourable for strengthening later this week as it slows down over the central Caribbean.

The NHC said there is a 10 percent chance of formation within the next 48 hours and a 60 percent chance over the next seven days. If the system develops further, a tropical depression could form by the middle to latter part of the week.

Forecaster Papin signed off on the advisory, urging residents and interests across the Caribbean to monitor updates closely as the system progresses westward.
