A tropical wave situated around 100 miles east of the Leeward Islands is being closely monitored by forecasters, with a 50% chance of cyclone formation in the next seven days.
The disturbance, which is currently producing concentrated but disorganised showers and thunderstorms, is moving west to west-northwest at around 15 to 20 mph. Weather conditions are expected to become more conducive for development as the week progresses.
By the latter part of the week, the system is forecast to slow and turn northwestward, with the potential to strengthen into a tropical depression over the southwestern Atlantic or near the Bahamas.
Forecasters warn that, regardless of development, gusty winds and heavy rainfall are likely to affect parts of the Leeward Islands late on Monday night and Tuesday.
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are also expected to see unsettled weather on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The chance of formation within the next 48 hours remains low, at around 10%.
