The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) is continuing to issue advisories on Tropical Storm Dexter, currently swirling over the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, as forecasters also monitor two other weather systems for possible development.
Dexter, the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, poses no immediate threat to land at this time. Updated forecasts and tracking information are available at Hurricanes.gov.
Meanwhile, attention is turning to an area several hundred miles off the southeastern US coast, where a weak surface trough is expected to evolve into a low-pressure system within the next day or so. According to the NHC, conditions appear favourable for gradual development, and a tropical depression could form later this week or over the weekend.
Forecasters have given this system a low (10%) chance of forming in the next 48 hours, but a medium (40%) chance over the next seven days. The disturbance is expected to move slowly westward before turning more northward by the weekend.
Further east, a tropical wave currently positioned over the far eastern Atlantic is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms. The system is tracking west-northwestward and could also strengthen over the coming days.
“There is a medium (50%) chance that a tropical depression could form from this wave late this week or over the weekend,” the NHC reported.
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be above normal, and meteorologists continue to urge residents across the region to remain alert and prepared as storm activity increases during the peak months of August and September.
