Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin affecting Barbuda later Thursday as Tropical Storm Jerry moves closer to the northern Leeward Islands, prompting a Tropical Storm Warning for the island and watches across the wider region.

At 11 a.m. AST, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Jerry was located near latitude 15.9 North and longitude 59.1 West, about 310 miles (495 kilometers) east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

The storm is moving west-northwest at 18 mph (30 km/h) with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 km/h).

The government of Antigua and Barbuda issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Barbuda, meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within 12 hours.

Watches remain in effect for Antigua, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, St. Barthelemy, St. Martin, Sint Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Guadeloupe with its adjacent islands.

Forecasters expect Jerry to gradually strengthen over the next few days and possibly reach hurricane strength by late Friday or Saturday. Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers) from the center, with a minimum central pressure of 999 millibars.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches, are forecast across the Leeward and Virgin Islands through Friday, bringing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Puerto Rico could also see similar rainfall amounts due to moisture associated with the storm.

Swells generated by Jerry are already impacting parts of the Leeward and Windward Islands and are expected to spread toward the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight, producing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Residents are advised to complete preparations, stay alert for official updates from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service, and monitor advisories from the National Hurricane Center.

The next full update will be issued at 5 p.m. AST.
