A prison officer and his family have been placed in protective custody after their Belmont home was attacked resulting in the injury of a child.
According to reports prisons officer, Nigel Daniel and his family were awoken by gunshots at their home at Jerningham avenue in Belmont after midnight.
Daniel escaped unscathed but his daughter, who is reportedly under five-years-old was grazed by a bullet.
Police arrived on the scene within minutes but were unable to capture the gunmen.
Daniel’s daughter was taken to the Port-of-Spain general hospital for treatment and the family was then moved to an undisclosed and secure location.
The shooting comes on the heels of a series of violent attacks on prison officers over the past two months.
The prisons officers’ association Cerron Richards confirmed the incident and assured it was being closely monitored.
