Trinidad grandfather, 62, denied bail for sexually assaulting his granddaughters, 11 and 12

Trinidad Guardian — A 62-year-old man was yesterday remanded into custody after appearing virtually before a San Fernando magistrate, charged with three counts of sexual touching and one count of sexual penetration against his 11- and 12-year-old granddaughters respectively.

In a media release yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said the accused, who resides in San Fernando, was arrested and charged on Thursday with the offences by WPC Alexander, of the Southern Division Child Protection Unit, who investigated two reports made on April 17, 2023, involving the minors.

The man will reappear before the court on October 13, where he is expected to answer the charges.

Police said in the first case, an 11-year-old girl told detectives that during the period January 2022 to December 2022, she was in a bedroom when a man whom she knows allegedly squeezed her breast and bottom.

She told CPU detectives that similar incidents happened during the period January 1, 2023, to February 20, 2023, and again during April 1, 2023, to April 8, 2023.

The TTPS said in the second case, a 12-year-old girl reported to CPU detectives that on a date unknown between January 2021 and December 2021, a man whom she knows also allegedly sexually assaulted her in the bathroom of his home.

Following investigations supervised by Superintendent Claire Guy-Alleyne, ag Insp Ramphal, Sgt Andrews and Cpl Thompson, of the Special Victims Department, the suspect was charged with the offences.

The matters were heard by Magistrate Armina Deonarinesingh.
