Trevor Walker Responds To Hospital Beds Controversy

Barbuda Member of Parliament Trevor Walker has responded to allegations that the Barbuda Council abandoned beds donated to the sister isle.

“I am extremely disappointed with Philmore Mullins, the Director of NODS, and more so, the Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, for putting this out there as if it’s a situation where the Barbuda Council should be blamed for what I saw on social media,” Walker said on Thursday.

“We reached out to NODs, because we wanted to see what those items were so that we could get them to Barbuda and store them properly,” Walker explained.

“NODS refused to send these things to Barbuda … and we don’t believe that NODS stored these things properly.”

He said the items were finally shipped to Barbuda on July 2, without any form of covering or protection from the elements while on the barge.

“When those things reached Barbuda they were in a deplorable condition. Terrible. Wheels broken, rusting, the electrical parts of these things totally damaged. So, NODS, whatever they did for two years, had them dusted, rusting, rats eat off the electricals, all sorts of problems,” Walker said.

“Out of the 10 beds, two were completely not working, cannot be used so we are left with eight beds … all of them had issues. He [the technician] had to install new electricals, new wires, new ends for the plugs to get them to work,” Walker said.

“We decided we’re going to fix them up because we’re very grateful to donors who have contributed to the cause of Barbuda after Hurricane Irma.”

The items that were salvageable have been stored away and are now operable, Walker said. The pictures circulating on social media are of the two beds which were beyond repair.

“So it was very unfortunate that this thing was hyped up in a particular way. Everything to make the Barbuda Council look bad, perpetuated by a prime minister, in my view, that has no clue about anything in Barbuda and it’s very, very unfortunate,” Walker said.

“I just want to take this opportunity to again thank the British High Commissioner and all those donors who donated to Barbuda two years ago and just to let them know it’s just on the 2nd of July [that] we have seen what the donation is and we’re grateful.”

“What NODs and the Prime Minister should do, and I’m asking for it again, is to produce an audited statement of all the donations received — money, goods and otherwise — for Barbuda to the public.

“Up to now, as transparent as this administration says they are, we have not received an audited statement from the Prime Minister, from the Government, from NODS, concerning what they’ve donated to Barbuda. And I find it very ironic that they’re going to use a situation like this to make us look bad when they themselves are not transparent,” Walker added.

  1. Who is really in charge of the twin island state? Too long for this SHIT been going on. If it is the PM act accordingly and put this bickering to bed. It’s either Barbuda gets its secession or the government takes decisive action to govern both islands.

  2. Why is there so much animosity between the people of Barbuda and Gaston Browne as Prime Minister. This has been going on for almost 6 years now.The insults and nastiness has to stop, now. There seems to be deep dark hatred between Gaston Browne and the Barbuda people.WHY?We as a Black Race would want to criticized the White Man.Perhaps rightfully so.However, this is a Black Leader in Antigua. The people on Barbuda are also Black. So why they cannot sit down and argue, ironed out all of the wrinkles. That is what you would do in a negotiation.Black on Black. What is wrong with us as a people. Why we do not and cannot get along.Let us rid ourselves of that deep darkened hatred towards each other.Perhaps that would help.Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Here is a question. Is power a corrupting force?

  3. Trevor Walker, your lame-duck explanation will only resonate with persons of your kind. Clearly you are still nursing your self-inflicted wounds, griping over some mistaken notion that Antigua had been withholding millions of donations earmarked for your village following the devastating hurricane over two years ago. You deliberately, knowing how your diabolical mind is wired, chose to leave the hospital equipment at the mercy of the elements in a backfired attempt to stage your latest, now trite performance of “Poor Barbuda – look how Antiguans treat us”. It was a criminal act to let these donations remain on a virtual dump heap, especially during times like these and the criminal should be prosecuted. It’s high time to stop treating these barbarians with kid gloves.

    • Seems like you’re an ass, what damage could the elements cause in 3 weeks, smh. I believe what Trevor Walker is saying is absolutely the truth and for some reasons most of us Antiguans seem to have a problem with Barbudans for reasons i don’t know.
