A trespassing case involving members of the Antigua and Barbuda United Progressive Party (UPP) was adjourned on Wednesday to allow prosecutors time to complete disclosure documents.

The charges stem from a June 9 protest at Cinnamint Hill Estate, where opposition members visited beaches across the country to raise concerns about public access and alleged non-compliance with legal requirements.

Ahead of the court hearing, UPP member Alister Thomas told Observer Media that the warrant against him referenced unlawful entry at a Willikies property tied to the protest.

He defended the demonstration as a stand against restricted beach access and inadequate emergency access routes and facilities.

Legal representation for the UPP members includes MP Sherfield Bowen, Justin Simon, and Kendrickson Kentish.

The case is expected to resume in 30 days.

  8. Pete are u an ass Hole or just the Hole just want to know what part of the bottom u are or wen the shit jop out thats u ?

  9. Can any sane person be this stupid? They too are being deprived and are not aware or they are all out dunces. They accused the group of playing politics but they are doing just the same but without reason. These so-called developers blatantly breech our laws and then seek protection from the same, with the assistance of our government and its simple minded followers. Slavery really persisted because of these caliber of people.

  10. If there is a breach of the beach access law either the government or private citizens can test the breach in court. For private citizens to try to deal with the breach outside of the law is breaking the law. Two wrongs do not make a right. Finally, the police accompanying the UPP beach-a-cade does not mean trespass or other breaches of the law cannot take place in their presence. The police is there to ensure the peace and safety of all and not to watch breaking of the law. The whole scenario was badly handled by the police to begin with. In the case of Lawry Bay, as far as I know an alternative access was created. That point alone makes the protest at the traditional access point mischievous and seeking political attention.

  11. By some of these comments you would think some people think it’s ok to forfeit their beaches. When they are all privatized and you have no where to go, I would like to see what song they sing.

The carribean sells of its beaches to the highest bidders. What next, your children? Oh wait that’s already happening.

I’m personally glad someone is paying attention to my rights. Our beaches should not even be up for debate. They belong to the people of Antigua and we share with foreigners and investors not the other way around. Let that sink in.

  12. As Antiguans we are too partisan politically. This is an issue that will affect all of us in the future. Our children will have little or no access to the 365 beaches we boast about. Look at Halcyon or Dickenson Bay. The recently built or renovated hotel built houses on the water. In doing so they cut off northern portion of our beach. Where is DCA on issues like this ? Who’s defending the people’s rights to free access to all our beaches. As a people there are issues regardless of who is advocating, we all need to at least take a serious look at and this is definitely one. The next is the use of social security funds to invest in Jolly beach. This is not just an issue that Harold Lovell and the opposition should be paying attention to. This will affect every citizen. Every contributor to the statuary bodies should show interest, every employer that contributes on the behalf of his or her employees, every parent, every child. Just take for example after this money is withdrawn from social security and we have a hurricane that disrupts the tourism sector- what are the repercussions. So I personally think that decisions like these should not be just left up to the politicians but to the entire nation. In recent times we hear of social security saying that scheme is not sustainable, hence increasing the rates and increasing the pension age. They have cried lack of funds for not paying pensioners, maternity leave and funeral expenses on time. These are issues that must be discussed. Were they truthful? If so how come they can now cough up 75 million dollars.
    SOMETHING NA ADD UP ???

  13. The ALP is using the property owner as a proxy against upp and the people of Antigua in general, because they went on robin verandah property.so this exercise the attorney general has instructed the magistrate to carry out, is a deterrent exercise for the future, but time is on the UPP and the nation side, because these old politicians will have to leave office and one day become non existent, and the future generations will set the country in order, unless we inherit more politicians on the payroll of the white investors.

  14. @ Just A Thought I have read all the comments on this important issue and I must say that yours is the most balanced and sensible. Besides partisan politics we must try to be balanced and fair in our analysis.
