Antigua to Step Up Road Marking, Lighting and National Cleanup

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced new measures to improve Antigua and Barbuda’s infrastructure and public spaces, including expanded road marking teams, the installation of solar street lights and a nationwide cleanup drive.

Speaking on Point FM, Browne said the Transport Board will double its road-marking crews from two to four, employing more staff to ensure roads remain safely marked.

He also revealed that Antigua and Barbuda will shortly receive 1,800 solar-powered street lights from China, to be installed across the island within weeks.

In addition, Browne confirmed the creation of a special demolition unit to clear derelict buildings, alongside large-scale tree planting from a new nursery at Painters. The initiative aims to plant up to one million trees per year and significantly improve the country’s appearance within 18 months.

The Prime Minister said the combined efforts form part of his administration’s wider plan to give Antigua and Barbuda a “new look,” with cleaner, better-lit and safer public spaces.

  1. Solar.lights will become useless unless a protective mechanism is placed around the battery to prevent theft. Please learn from the past. Otherwise they will simply be another post for those boys to crash into.

  2. Can’t we go be an alternative source for the stay lights? The solar lights are dim, they stop working in no time, and thieves keep stealing the batteries.

I’m also happy to hear about the road markings, but just as a man on the street, the paint doubt seems to last long. Is there a better paint to mark the streets?
