Training for Port Authority Staff a Priority for the Management

The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority is prioritizing staff training to enhance competitiveness and foster career growth, according to Senator Mary-Claire Hurst, Chairperson of the authority.

Speaking during the Senate debate on the 2025 Appropriation Bill, Hurst emphasized the importance of equipping staff with the skills needed to excel in an evolving global market.

“When you are trained, you can compete,” she said, underscoring her commitment to developing the workforce.

Hurst acknowledged the risks associated with investing in training, as employees become more marketable and may pursue opportunities elsewhere.

However, she maintained that the benefits outweigh the challenges.

“You run a risk when you train your staff because they become marketable, but it is something I intend to do,” she stated.

The Port Authority has also engaged with local schools to expose students to port management as a viable career path.

“We have adopted a school in the area so they can have an opportunity to come down to the port to see that port management can be a career,” Hurst explained.

The Chairperson noted that the authority has reached a stage where it is recognized as an attractive place to work. “We have brought the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority to a stage where Antiguans really want to be a part of it,” she said.
