Tourist Arrivals to Antigua and Barbuda by Air Surge, Yet 2023 Figures Lag Behind 2019 Peak

The percentage of tourist arrivals by air to Antigua and Barbuda has witnessed an increase, indicating ongoing improvement.

However, these arrivals have yet to reach the levels seen in 2019, which was a record-breaking year for tourism. According to the latest data from the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA), December 2023 experienced a 14% decrease in arrivals compared to the figures from 2019.

In December 2019, there were 37,818 visitor arrivals, with 41% (15,662) originating from the United States. In 2023, this figure dropped to 32,516, with 16,051 coming from the United States. This shift increased the U.S. share of the source market to 49%.

The decline in December 2023 arrivals can be attributed to decreases in other source markets such as Canada, the UK, Europe, and the Caribbean. These declines may be linked to challenges in securing adequate airlifts from these source markets to the destination.

While occupancy rates in December 2023 show improved performance compared to the same month in 2019, adjusting for available room nights reveals that the overall performance in 2023 still falls behind that of 2019.

  1. One and a half hours to get through the cursory immigration check is appalling. Apparently a constant issue. It only takes 10 minutes in Barbados and Canada.

  2. Immigration in St. Maarten always took a whole 10 seconds. Phew!
Time to scrap whoever is running the show in Antigua. Their incompetence is taking money out of everyone’s pockets.
