Tourism Minister Calls Cruise Talks ‘Encouraging’

Tourism Minister Charles “Max” Fernandez has described negotiations at SeaTrade Cruise Global 2025 as “encouraging,” with a strong focus on expanding cruise tourism and cleaner energy options.

Leading a delegation to the April 7–10 event in Miami, Fernandez said discussions centred on increasing homeporting, attracting more ship calls, and improving shore experiences.

He also highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s readiness to supply LNG (liquefied natural gas) to cruise ships—a shift many cruise lines are making to meet new environmental standards.

“We’re now in a position to provide LNG fuel,” he said. “That’s important because cruise lines will need it soon.”

The LNG terminal at Crabbs Peninsula will also allow Antigua to export gas across the region.

Fernandez added that shore power—allowing ships to plug into onshore electricity—was discussed but needs a cost-benefit analysis due to high energy demands.

SeaTrade Cruise Global is a major annual event shaping cruise industry strategy worldwide.
