Three Earthquakes Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda

Three moderate earthquakes were recorded in waters near Antigua and Barbuda over two days, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC).

The strongest, a magnitude 4.2 tremor, struck at 6:40am on Thursday 10 July, about 66km northeast of St John’s. A second quake measuring 3.5 occurred at the same location just over three hours later. Both were at a depth of 10km.

The day before, on 9 July, another magnitude 3.5 earthquake was recorded 110km north of the capital, also at a depth of 10km.

The epicentres were located in the Lesser Antilles, within reach of nearby islands such as Montserrat and Guadeloupe.

The UWI SRC noted the earthquakes were automatically detected, and their locations may be adjusted following further analysis.
