Governor General Sir Rodney Williams has announced that three Antiguans have been named in King Charles III’s New Year Honours for exceptional service to Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Commonwealth.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the awards, which will be presented at upcoming investiture ceremonies.
Honoured are Janey Howell, appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for philanthropic service; Dr. Gabriella Poppy Valentine Howell, appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for philanthropic service; and Assistant Commissioner of Police Desmond Dinard, who received the King’s Police Medal (KPM) for service to the Royal Police Force.
Sir Rodney said the recipients reflect the nation’s “dedication to duty, generosity of spirit, and commitment to the welfare of others,” adding that their achievements bring pride to the country and inspire future generations.
Janey Howell was recognised for decades of voluntary work in heritage preservation and philanthropy, including contributions to the Heritage Trust of Antigua and Barbuda, support for the Government House museum project, and humanitarian assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ACP Dinard was honoured for more than four decades in policing, including frontline and leadership roles since joining the force in 1982, with contributions to crime prevention, professional training and public safety.
Dr. Howell was recognised for leadership in cultural heritage and education, including restoring The Great House Antigua as a heritage tourism site and her work on the Government House Museum redevelopment, alongside charitable efforts in healthcare, education and environmental causes.
Sir Rodney said the honours underscore the international respect earned by Antiguans and Barbudans. Details of the investiture ceremonies will be announced.

I dont even know what to say about these appointments. SMH. I guess we should be satisfied with the token. So sad. In any case i only have one King my lord and savior.
What an absolute farce these colonial awards from the UK monarchy have become.
To be fair to the Caucasian recipients, they cannot see (or choose not to see) what these out-of-kilter awards really mean to many Antiguans. They are not only a way to retain kowtowing boot-licking deference to the monarchy by their lickspittling followers, but also a way of delaying our country from becoming a future Republic.
Remember, in recent times the Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin and PM Gaston Browne mentioned about loosening our ties with UK royalty.
Or are they still engaged in double speak as per usual to the Nation?
Not at all impressed! In fact, CHUPTZ!!!
You guys can be so mean for all the wrong reasons. We have three Antiguans who have contributed to nation building by volunteering their time and resources in the name of stewardship to patriotism, yet you find negative energy to to disrespect them. For the many years that they have chosen to take the lead, what did you all do?
Despite your commentary, the honour has already been conferred upon them.
Congratulations to all the of them. Antiguans and Barbudans making a difference.
Dr Ray, of course the recipients deserve recognition, but you, as a “supposedly” educated individual, mus understand that the criticisms are coming because these royal awards are only used as some sort of colonial reference point to maintain their so-called global relevance.
Their past and current histories are tainted.
Google and fact check it boss!
If you’ve followed my royal musings (and I’m sure you have avidly 😉) and diatribes against their continuous hold and influence on this beautiful country of ours, you’ll know that I’m a strong advocate of Antiguans receiving Antiguan awards.
Surely, you can see that?
Keep the focus on your position as our new Diaspora ambassador, and ignore the current nonsensical media brouhaha about the Royals who wouldn’t even pi#s on me or you if we were both on fire 🔥
… And there’s more Dr Ray. I know of quite Antiguans who do plenty of charitable work, who use their valuable time to distribute food, clothing and help the elderly with repairs in their homes.
They go about their very important voluntary work without any sort of recognition at all.
Maybe, you need to spend more time here in Antigua Dr Dave Ray…
*a few* Antiguans
@Brixtonian. You take your screen name after a black immigrant neighbourhood in South London (which is full of Antiguans) yet you continue to cry about colonial this and horrible UK that. Interesting🤔
The real farce is how Antigua is still stuck in the mindset of the 1980’s or before and you know who is to blame? Antiguans! On a tiny island with a small population, you’ve had 45 years to get your act together so blaming others is BS and you know it.
Nice try @ No Excuses at name guessing. Do try again! 🤣
However, you are correct in saying that we’ve “had 45 years to get [our] act together…”
Hopefully, this government is true to their words about eventually breaking away from the UK monarchy (which many of us Republicans doubt, because of the perceived kudos).
Let me play your game as well: Are you a Caucasian royalist living in Antigua?
See what I did there? Probably not!
I do enjoy constructive communications, do you not?
I doesn’t matter how great I become, these former enslavers and murderer and thieves and pedophile couldn’t compartmentalize me under their so call auspicies, they have to this to keep relevant and validated as this royal family thing, hiding their true background.
@Brixtonian. Or maybe you identify with the character in the film “The Brixtonian” (an upper class WHITE guy who thinks he’s a rasta!)🤣 If word gets out, your Antiguan street credibility will be ruined forever and worthy of an ANR story.
Yes, I am white. Yes, I have a residence in Antigua. I am no royalist🤮.
No one is stopping Antigua from becoming a republic except Antigua. I’m all in favour for it but is that going to improve the quality of life for the average islander? I think Antigua has more pressing issues to address, pressing issues that should have been handled a generation or two ago but if moaning about the horrible colonists makes people temporarily feel better then have at it.
Congratulations to all three especially ACP Dinard well done Sir..
Brixtonian is very right. All he saying is, it’s time for the Caribbean people to move away completely from colonialism and the British monarchy…What is wrong with that? Some people’s minds are soo politicized, that the only thing they can see is politics in everything. I don’t know much about the two ladies but, congratulations to Sir Dinard although, I’d prefer to read about, “the Prime Minister award” or the “Antigua Trinidad Cross” conferred on you.
