Thousands Register in Final Week Following Election Teaser
Thousands of voters moved to update or secure their identification in the final week of March following the Prime Minister’s indication that a general election could be called within 90 days, according to new data from the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission.
The Commission recorded 2,270 replacement voter ID applications and 507 new registrations between March 23 and 28, reflecting a surge in activity as the election timeline sharpens.
Updated cumulative figures show that 22,700 total applications have been processed so far, with 3,517 recorded in March alone, highlighting a sustained increase in voter engagement throughout the month.
The latest report indicates that several constituencies are approaching the halfway mark in re-registration. All Saints West, St. Mary’s South, and St. Paul are among areas nearing 48% completion, while St. Peter leads nationally at 80%, followed by St. Philip North (71%) and Barbuda (72%).
By contrast, more densely populated constituencies, including St. John’s Rural West (40%) and St. Mary’s North (39%), remain below the national pace.
The weekly breakdown also shows the sharpest activity occurred early in the reporting period, with daily replacement applications peaking at 471 on March 23 before tapering off by the end of the week.
The figures underscore a growing urgency among voters to complete the re-registration process as the country moves closer to a general election, with electoral officials continuing to urge eligible voters to update their records in time.
