Concern is mounting among vendors and operators at Little Ffryes Beach after a third tourist robbery in just five days, raising fears about the impact on the island’s image as a safe destination.

The most recent incident occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday, when a female visitor staying at Koko’s was robbed of her phone and other belongings. Witnesses reported that the assailants left the scene in a vehicle with a rental license plate.

The case follows two other robberies in the area within the past week, leaving vendors, jet ski operators and other service providers worried that the crimes could deter visitors and harm their livelihoods.

A police vehicle was seen patrolling the beach on Sunday as part of ongoing efforts to secure the area, but business owners say additional measures are needed to curb the trend.

Tourism officials have confirmed that steps are being taken to strengthen security at popular beaches.

Plans include commissioning new special constables, increasing patrol numbers, and placing lifeguard chairs to improve visibility in areas where thick vegetation provides cover for criminals. Authorities are also working to expand the use of surveillance cameras at selected beaches.

Police have not yet said whether the robberies are connected. Investigations are continuing.

For those who rely on tourism to earn a living, the concern is that unchecked incidents of this nature could damage the industry and reverberate across the wider economy.

  1. … And in the meantime our Prime Minister Gaston Browne is travelling abroad once again on the taxpayers purse on a visit where he can surely send someone else to represent him.

Antigua & Barbuda now needs a leader that’ll take the bull by the horns and then guide us safely and assuredly out of this crisis in crimes and misdemeanors.

Furthermore, when will his “diehard” supporters speak out as well on this issue?

THESE CRIMES ARE EFFECTING ALL OF US!

  2. As part of our tourism product, we must enhance the security of our beaches and only those with security should tourists be allowed to visit. Our tourism is too vital a product for us to play around with. These are very tough times in Antigua and no one is spared. We must immediately announce and publish those beaches that are monitored, overseen and scanned and encourage tourists to only visit those ones. The criminals are looking for the easiest targets and the beaches provides some of the simplest and accommodating ones.

  3. If this continues it will affect the tourist industry for sure, people should be able to relax with looking over their shoulders

  4. This is not okay,to much robbery in little Antigua.I remember days when ffryers was safe not a complain or issue these times are unbelievable

  5. All I could see was beautiful scenery and beautiful beaches. People should be able to enjoy this place without worry

  6. This is really worrying Little Ffryes is supposed to be a safe spot for tourists. The authorities need to step up patrols before more incidents happen.

  7. The police officers that sleep and relax on our tax dollar needs to be out patrolling 24 -7. They can’t be sitting in remote stations enjoying the AC and waiting for the phone to ring. We need to stop them from taking our vehicles on their personal mission so when a situation happens they can ve readily available…. But wait they get paid whether there’s a crime or not so I guess they really don’t care ( sarcasm)… patrolling makes a difference. Let the criminals feel your presence out there…

  8. The beach is just the beginning?

    For real?!

The security of the beach must be part and parcel of the security of the entire country. We cannot and must not ever think of the security of the tourist as separate from our security.

    We dumb or what?

Tourism is everybody’s business and security is everybody’s business too.

When the tourists come and find all dead native people, is what? Jumbie Jamboree?

  9. I pray they begin listening to me. How many times have I mentioned this will occur and provided my solutions?

  10. Little fryes my favorite beach?
    👀
    Oh my!!
What is the government doing about all these robberies eh??
This administration has got to go.
Father hear our cries oh lord!!

  11. Police never have enough vehicles. When you call them about domestic affairs until somebody gets shit or dies. But when its drugs out in numbers. Ridiculous system

  12. @brix if the prime minister travel or someone else represents him, wouldn’t it be the same cost for travel?

If he stays can he be at the beach as a security?

What difference would it be if he doesn’t travel?

Does he has the influence on the thieves if he stays?

Can’t you speak out against the thieves and tell them to stop?

  13. The government should get solar powered streetlight with camera combination out of china to replace all existing streetlights system and help the police and government solve crime.
It will be a deterrence and silver of these mysteries, because video footage would be there prior and after the incident.
The lamps are one compact thing with everything built-in, solar panel, batteries , camera with sim card equipped and LED lights.

  15. Reading some of the comments, its clear some persons have not read the article:
“Tourism officials have confirmed that steps are being taken to strengthen security at popular beaches.

  16. Now this a get out a hand these people messing with how the island eat we depend on tourism wtf time to done this

  17. Great work Antiguanewsroom. you guys go far and beyond. I hope the promises made by sulin are kept. More police patrols is needed on that beach. Long live Antigua and Barbuda

  18. As per usual the Gaston Browne forelock tuggers like @Positive Direction are missing the main points that I’m making – No surprise there then!

If by any chance, you’ve been following my comments of the growing crimes and misdemeanors in Antigua, you would have observed that not only have I spoken out with gusto about gun crimes, home invasions, robberies in the business community, but also that I’m equally disgusted with our Prime Minister who has virtually stayed UNUSUALLY quiet on this serious matter; and will not for some reason address the nation as to how he – as well as our security forces – are going to resolve this rising tidal wave of criminal activities that’s threatening to engulf this small island.

You seem happy to give PM Browne a pass 🤔

However, if attacking messengers like myself gives you some sort of weird comfort … go fill your ‘lickspittling’ boots!

  19. I was robbed on that beach 5 years ago. Seems nothing has changed. Robbed in daylight with tourist all around. Sitting in my beach chair reading a book and out of the bushes a guy darted, grabbed my tote bag that was next to me, tucked it under his arm an back into the bushes. Just like that. Lucky for me the bag only had a picnic lunch. It sure woke me up to the crime on our beaches. I’ve never returned to that beach.
I believe the police should be looking closely at the older men just sitting in their cars pretending to be enjoying the view. They are what I call seers, informing the young men of possible victims.

  20. Tourism is our main bread and butter and we need to protect it with all that we have available. It makes no sense to have police sitting in their offices and come at take statements after the crime is committed. We need police posts at those popular beaches. Just like we need Lifeguards at those beaches. Please Mr. Minister Fernandes we need you to press on the COP and the AG that we must have the presence of police at popular beaches.
