Their Excellencies Visit Centenarian Mary Ann Prince on the Occasion of Her 100th Birthday

Their Excellencies Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, her Excellency Lady Sandra Williams and Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Kingdom paid a warm visit to Mrs Mary Ann Prince on Friday 1st August 2025 as she celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mary Ann Prince was born on 14th June 1925 in Urlings Village, Antigua and is one of nine siblings. She was born to Catherine Jude and Nathaniel Prince. She attended Johnson’s Point School, where she was remembered for her vibrant and fiery spirit. As a young woman, she worked the land of Cades Bay alongside her mother, cultivating a love for agriculture that remained with her for the entirety of her life.

In the 1960s, Mary left Antigua abroad a ship in search of better opportunities in England. With support from her youngest sister, she secured employment at the TW Kemptiqons Hosiery Factory and later as a healthcare assistant at Glenfrith Hospital – roles in which she formed lifelong friendships.

A lover of the land, Mary maintained a lush garden and allotment in England, growing a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers – particularly sunflowers, her favourite. Known in Leicester for her delicious rice pudding and mah (tripe), Mary’s culinary skills became legendary, and even at age 99, she continued to pass down her recipes to her grandchildren.

Mary’s family includes 6 children, 26 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great children.

Speaking at the visit, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams said: “Miss Mary Ann Prince is a shining example of the strength, resilience and unwavering spirit that defines the Antiguan and Barbuda diaspora. Her contributions both at home and abroad, and the legacy she has built through her family, community service and enduring cultural price, are truly inspiring. We are honoured to celebrate this remarkable milestone with her.”

Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill added: “It is a privilege to visit Miss Prince on this momentous occasion. Her journey from Urlings Village to England. Her journey from Urlings Village to England, her hard work and generosity and her deep love for both Antigua and Barbuda and the United Kingdom is commendable. Her story is a reminder of the enduring connections between our homeland and our diaspora here in the United Kingdom”.

The Office  the Governor-General extends heartfelt congratulations to Ms Mary Ann Prince on reaching her 100th birthday and wish her continued joy, health and happiness.
