Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney said:

“What we have discovered and shared with the general public is that there has been a slight increase in certain types of crimes.

These include property acquisition crimes, break-ins, and malicious damage. We are greatly concerned as the numbers continue to climb. Reports of stolen items from businesses, homes, and farms have been on the rise.

Incidents of home invasion when individuals are away and robberies have also been reported.

While the number of robberies in 2022 was less than in 2021, we observed a worrisome trend in the early part of 2023.

By that time, we had already surpassed the number of robberies recorded in the previous year.

For instance, in 2021, there were 98 reported robberies, while in 2022, there were 87. This year, the figures started to climb, raising concerns about a potential increase in robberies.

However, it is important to note that we wouldn’t classify the situation as a crisis or an escalation.

The numbers are changing, indicating the need for urgent and aggressive action from the police to address the issue.

Areas of particular concern are the frequent break-ins into people’s homes and thefts occurring in office spaces. It is disheartening that personal belongings are no longer safe, even in seemingly secure locations.

Farmers have also been targeted, with livestock and agricultural products being stolen.

We cannot predict where our homicide rate will go, but we have seen a decrease in recent years. In 2021, there were 16 homicides, which reduced to 10 in 2022.

So far, we have had eight reported cases this year, although there were ten deaths. These are the offenses that we are particularly concerned about.

  1. Tell that to those who have suffered from crime in recent times Commissioner Rodney.

The bottom line is that we need a far more fitter fighting policing service to defeat the criminal fraternity.

Stop trying to hoodwink and insult Antiguans intelligence by your deflectionary comments.

What we want to hear from you is that there is more 24 hour surveillance; more police presence in the quieter areas of Antigua; and then tackle the gunman with the same force as they seem to be doing at present.

We know that many of your officers cannot even afford trousers or equipment (according to recent reports), if true, then it’s incumbent upon you to ask the Prime Minister for more funds to do your job.

    SIMPLE REALLY BOSS MAN …

  2. The puppet speaks. Atlee Rodney should have been fired long ago. Crime is at an all time high, people are not feeling safe, thieves rob in broad daylight with impunity and this idiot makes this asanine comment. Gaston Browne loves him. Other than drugs, what crime have they solved in recent times? Boss, just shut up. No one wants to hear anything you have to say. No plan or course of action, just a pathetic attempt at damage control.

  3. STOP IT SIR! Just stop with the minimizing! Crime is SPIRALLING OUT OF CONTROL! The people are terrified! You must be the only person who does not see that. You must be too busy going on training, and sending our police to St. Lucia to help them to fight their crime situation. We NEED them back here! We need help ourselves. Ever heard, “Parson christen he pickney first.”

  4. What world are u in Sir? Everyday bloody day we are hearing people are getting robbed or shot! and now guns are in the hands of kids!! They’re even raping people and you say its not spiralling out of control?? U sir should step down for even that comment!!

  5. “a slight increase” REALLY? Sir, crime is out of control in Antigua. Don’t try to sugar coat it, just do your job better. The way it looks to most Antiguans is you all need to take some of that money that politicians are using to travel all over the world to improve the police force because your guys are the worst.
What is the purpose of your article? Are we to feel better or worst about you being the Commissioner of Police?

  6. Where does Rodney live? It could not be in Antigua. What ever you are drinking and or smoking give them up now. For they are distorting your judgement in my opinion. He needs to go now. Sail or ride off into that sunset like yesterday.

  7. The funny thing is, CRIME has being spiraling out of control, since, the 1990’s in Point, Villa, Ottos, Clare Hall and other Communities in and around St. John’s. It’s only now, that these Street Thugs are terrorizing the whole Island, that EVERYONE is paying attention.

Crime and CRIMINALITY has roots and root causes just like any culture, hence, the reason why it’s referred to as the CRIME CULTURE.
Address the ROOTS of CRIME, and the crime culture will be brought under control. Crime will always be with HUEmanity, therefore, it can only be controlled, through PROACTIVE MEASURES, not knee_jerk, spineless reactions.

  8. Meanwhile criminals are listening to this joker and thinking that they are ok to continue their lawlessness because it’s ” not so bad”. Doesn’t the police force have a public relations officer, someone who is trained in human physiology that can speak on their behalf, instead of listening to this empty shell who’s life is clearly unaffected by the crime that is perpetrating on the island?

Get the damn guns off the streets, that’s what you should be working on and leave the talking to someone else.smdh. they are paying you the hefty salary to get things done for peace sakes… sheesh 🙄.

Bwoi Antigua and it’s leaders just makes me puke 🤮🤢.

  9. The police are not to blame for crime, CRIMINALS are to blame. In an ideal world, you would never need to see the police.
