Barbuda’s new international airport, set to open on October 3, 2024, was expected to be named the “Burton-Nibbs International Airport,” but a surprising development has occurred. The family of the late Sir Eric Burton has respectfully requested his name be removed from the facility.
In a letter to the government, the family emphasized their wish to preserve Sir Eric’s distinct legacy, describing him as a cultural custodian whose contributions went beyond infrastructure. They also acknowledged Arthur Nibbs’ key role in the airport’s development, suggesting he be solely recognized for the project.

I hope that the Cabinet persists in naming the Airport as planned. Contrary to what the family might think, Eric Burton does not just belong to them; he also belongs to the people of Antigua and Barbuda. The Cabinet did not need the family’s permission to honor one of its citizen’s. What is happening here is a grateful nation is honoring one of its distinguished members and that has nothing to do with what the family thinks and believes, period. The honor is neither personal nor familial; its not the family’s wishes that are being honored here. They should be glad that Mr. Burton is getting his due, posthumously though it might be. Family: get with it; it was never about you!!!! The Cabinet should persist in the naming plan.
The final decision rests with the government.
Mr. Burton has done so much for the development of Barbuda and so has Mr. Nibbs. The government should name the airport in their honor. This is not a personal matter.
They do not need his family’s permission to name a monument. He was a public figure. Only if he were a private citizen or in entertainment world they need permission. He devoted his life to service.
These petty frictions are the reasons why we cannot move forward as a unitary state.

His family who live on the Island, know his significance and all his contribution to Barbuda.
