Teen Gunman Receives 3-Year Sentence for Killing Syrian Man

3 year for taking a life. Smh

That’s the result of this sick society thinking that our teenaged murderers are to be pitied and pampered, victims of everyone else’s neglect. Now that youth killer will soon be back on the streets where, hopefully, he will receive jungle justice matching his heinous act.

If we don’t reign in these kids that are running rough shod over this country, we will have much more of this where they kill and commit other heinous crimes and literally get a slap on their wrists. It is time that our archaic laws be updated and amended in accordance with modern day statues. That a 16 year old can murder an innocent resident and get off with a 3 year sentence is unbelievable, ridiculous and ludicrous. The local Syrian community must be in shock and disbelief.

Antigua sentencing laws are a joke and lately it’s like the court system is on a restructuring roll with all these ridiculous dismissal, freeing and sentencing.
Found guilty of taking a man’s life and get three years. Laughable.

It’s sad that only three years is maximum sentence that a 16 year old can receive, but the law is the law. Unless and until parliament amends that law, the courts have no alternative. I trust that the young man is penitent in the process, and will learn from the errors of his ways.
He can take a different path in adulthood to become a productive citizen in the community.

We have two very critical issues here – the arms of the law sympathetic towards children , teens and young adults. Hey when I look back at some of the stupid decisions I made as teen and young adult, not criminal but dangerous risk that could have ended my life easily. So I think it’s understood scientifically that the brain is not fully developed and hence the sympathy. On the other hand an innocent life is taken. The lost of a son , a boyfriend, young man in the prime of his life. Nothing can repay that, no prison sentence, not even lifetime. Not even taking of his like will bring back a love one lost in such a nonsensical , horrible and heinous crime. So what ever the punishment it will not bring about anything.
So what do we do , like Chantel we try to prevent this from happening again. We have too much delinquent young boys running around this country. Worsened to me by the decriminalization of marijuana, which is not handled properly.
We have no problem to address, the delinquency brought about by poverty and lack of education. So this will happen again until we address this from the bottom up.
Then we need to look at where all these illegal firearms are coming into this country from. Fingers are pointing in all directions. One thing is sure , that these teens are not the importers of these firearm.

I told you that our current judiciary isn’t fit for purpose.

This low murder tariff is not only a kick in the teeth to the justice system, but also a firm kick in the teeth to the relatives of the deceased.

How on earth did they get to such low sentencing?

Are they still following the UKs “ancient” Privy Counsel guidelines? Or simply their own incompetence?

When the Prime Minister challenged the Judiciary and voiced exactly our voices and told them that they are giving the criminals low penalties and that robbers and thieves are on the street in sometimes less then a year, the UPP and lawyers attached to them said he was mingling in a branch that he had no business to do. But he was right. He was the people’s voice. Now look what is happening again and all of you are distraught once again. Tell me should our Prime Minister who represent the voices of the people of this country remain silent again, just because of the political haters like Brix? I say no Mr. PM Speak up and let your voice be heard all the way in the Privy Council. This is nonsense what the judiciary has done. I really hope that the DPP eventhough independent will do whatever he can to appeal this sentence. This young criminal should be trialed like an adult. Shame on the judiciary.

If that fellow was in custody, you recognise that they’ll take time on remand, which means he’s back in the society by next year?

Wow! That man’s life is only worth 3 years? We need to stop this juvenile nonsense. If someone is bold enough to pick up an adult weapon, then let them be bold enough to carry out a full adult sentencing of life in prison. That was no defense or accident, he went to break the law (rob), then killed the innocent man. Some lawyers would pay big time on judgement day for defending these criminals all in the name of getting rich.

You do not make this situation take away the science of this. I am not saying he should get only 3 years but this tool should be available for teens in certain situations. This MAY NOT or MAY BE one of the situation but this discretion should be available at all times in the law. Please trust me and the science on this.

@ Less We Forget, it’s nice to know your ignorance shows no bounds. If you didn’t already know, Gaston Browne has an Attorney General, and his role normally entails a Criminal Justice policy.

Let me help you out once again:

Steadroy Benjamin as AG plays a major role in shaping criminal justice policies, so that we don’t have to witness miscarriages like this aforementioned 3 year murder sentence.

Gaston Browne – according to you – may have complained about the lack of correct sentencing from the judiciary in the past, but surely if he’s appointed an Attorney General to represent this ABLP government – where Benjamin must protect the public safety and interests -, then this 3 year sentence for murder just isn’t enough as a deterrent.

Finally, the AG is more or less the SUPERINTENDENT of our prosecuting authorities, and as an overseer should ensure FAIRNESS and EFFECTIVENESS in sentencing.

You speak as if Browne and Benjamin have no say or input in this serious matter.
