St. John’s Rural South Member of Parliament Eustace Teco Lake encountered “a problem” during his kidney transplant on Friday, Government’s Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst has said.

One year ago the Works and Housing Minister was on life support after being diagnosed with kidney failure. He found a donor late last year and had the transplant late Friday at the Mount St. John Medical Centre.

Hurst did not give details about the complications experienced by the MP but indicated that the procedure was successful in the end.

“There are two teams; the that takes the kidney from the donor and the second team that implants the kidney in Mr Lake. The first team didn’t encounter any difficulty at all,” Hurst reported.

“With Teco Lak, just a little bit of problem and it took them up until 10 O’ clock at night but it was over and he’s doing well,” the government spokesman added.

“It takes several days before he can leave the hospital but the donor has already been discharged. So it looks as though everthing went okay” Hurst told a local radio station.

Due to his illness, the minister will not be contesting the next general election on a Labour Party ticket.

He has been replaced with Daryl Matthew.
