The 4th Annual Antigua & Barbuda Tech Week 2019, wrapped up on Saturday 14th 2019 at iLabGlobal office on Old Parham Road and the American University of Antigua (AUA).
Each year for the last four years, iLabGlobal, a local technology training company in Antigua, has led the event, as an International partner with Code.org. Code.org is the organisation credited with spreading the need for Computer Science education in the United States and all over the world.
This year’s celebration focused on the Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain technology and Cryptocurrency. Essentially, the team was comprised of local and international experts who spoke about the increases of ease conducting business using smart devices, the development of the encrypted technology called Blockchain, which controls the creation and verification processes to transfer funds digitally without the high service fees charged by intermediary banks and companies.
For the first time this year, the #ANUTechWeek program was opened to the public. During the last week, over 100 students and individuals got an opportunity to gain hands-on skills about how to interact with and trade cryptocurrency from their own digital wallet. The session was led by experts from a leading cryptocurrency company in the USA. Participants were given gifts and t-shirts from the supporting company.
Participants were taken through steps to create a Smart Contract. Smart Contracts are used to govern safe digital transactions using cryptocurrencies. Budding Software Engineers got to have conversations with the experts on-hand, allowing them insight into the developing career field. It is important to note that industry experts have suggested these skills should begin to be taught as early as primary school, to prepare students for the changing digital landscape.
