Team from the Department of the Blue Economy completes training in China

A team from the Department of the Blue Economy, led by Director Ann-Louise Hill, has successfully completed a three-week training programme in China on marine spatial planning and related topics.

The programme was organized by the Fujian Institute of Oceanography and the Ministry of commerce of the people’s republic of China.

The training programme covered various aspects of marine spatial planning, such as:

  • Mariculture technology and its application in different regions.
  • Sustainable development of ocean food and its contribution to food security.
  • Marine observation and monitoring systems and their role in marine management.Best practices and case studies of marine spatial planning from China and other countries.
  • Legal and institutional frameworks for marine spatial planning and cross-sectoral coordination.

The team also visited several mariculture facilities, marine observation stations, and marine protected areas in China to learn from their experiences and challenges.

Director Hill expressed her gratitude to the Chinese government for hosting the training programme and providing valuable knowledge and skills to the Antiguan team.

She said, “This training programme has been very beneficial for us, as we are developing our own marine spatial planning system in Antigua and Barbuda.

We have learned a lot from the Chinese experts and practitioners, and we hope to apply some of their best practices in our context.

We also appreciate the opportunity to exchange views and ideas with our counterparts from other countries who participated in the programme.”

 

 

The Department of the Blue Economy was established in 2021 to promote the sustainable use and management of Antigua and Barbuda’s Ocean resources.

The department is responsible for developing policies, strategies, and plans for the blue economy sectors, such as fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, maritime transport, renewable energy, and marine conservation.

  1. After we have gotten this under our belts and have initiated sustainable related projects and activities, we have to turn our attention to managing and measuring the impact of the activities and projects. Only then will we be able to quantify the positive environmental benefits.
