Teachers in Antigua have entered their third day of strike action, causing significant disruption to exams and school schedules. The protest stems from delays in issuing promotional instruments for around 70 educators, a promise the Antigua Union of Teachers says was due by March 30.

With many students unable to take their exams, concern is growing among parents about the effect on academic progress. Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, Lionel Max Hurst, has assured that the instruments will be provided by Friday, blaming the Ministry of Education for the delay.

The government hopes that this will end the strike and allow students to resume exams without further interruptions.

  1. And they feel so much in their right to do that to the children. I guess when your right you strong. Let them continue to play politics over the backs of the children. When CXC times come and the marks are low from our children, I wonder who they will blame.

  2. Less we forget you’re such a fu:king ass trying to blame the teachers for what’s going on, how come u not blaming government for their negligence towards the teachers? You’re the one playing politics! A fi:k:ng minion you are !

  3. 90% of those politicians (ABLP) have their children going to Island Academy, St. Anthony’s Secondary, St. Joseph’s Academy and Christ the King, so they eally don’t give a dam a dam about the striking teachers and their issues because their children are comfortable at the island’s most elite schools while the masses has to use the public education system!!!

  4. Why does it always appear as if things never get done until industrial action is taken? Where are the senior technocrats in the Ministries who should be overseeing and following up these pertinent issues? It sends an awful message that persons charged with the responsibility of educating our children are not being properly looked after. We cannot expect the educators to give of their best if they are not taken care of and treated with respect and dignity.

  5. How is this possible in an economic Powerhouse? When you talk too much and don’t speak the truth, things like these are the results. They huff the Alfa Nero, sold it and divi up the money. The TEN MILLION U.S DOLLAR MAN took his share and thought nothing of the educational system.

  6. Teaching is NOT a profession for just any and everybody in need of a .monthly pay cheque! Sadly though we have been forced to confront a stark and painful reality. Somehow, somewhere and at some time, the floodgates were busted open and in rushed a motley of job seekers looking for a refuge which allowed them to share in the residual love, honor and respect easily won and enjoyed by all the teachers of yesteryear. Today however those placed in charge of imparting knowledge to the next generation leave much to be desired. From day 1 , it should have been inculcated into their minds that the children and young people placed in their care are their/our # 1 priority. They are NOT disposable tokens to be used as pawns in teachers’ games, political or otherwise. Our students deserve a much higher standard of service. If our students were given the opportunity to evaluate the competence and suitability for continued employment and/or promotion, the very teachers who today prefer to ignore the needs of our children because of grievances over the tardy promotion appointments of a few “teachers” preferring to ignore their responsibilities towards them, exposing them to predatory child molesters who could take advantage of unsupervised, vulnerable children because they and their Party have their own agenda, they would be far more keen to take their “job” seriously.
But they’d better beware of Karma. Most of those “teachers” are parents themselves. If they think that they can continue to expose our children to real and potential danger while delaying their intellectual development and future because the government still owes a few of their friends or have delayed their Appointments, they’d better understand that what goes around usually comes right back around. Their own children will suffer sooner or later for the suffering and neglect they mete out to other people’s children.

  7. Hey you Less We Forget, can you please remind the world whose backs were the staff at the General hospital- MSJMC riding on earlier this week when they too held a protest over not getting paid on time?
