Teachers in Antigua and Barbuda are continuing their sit-in protest, now in its third day, over long-standing unpaid allowances.

The dispute, which dates back to 2018, began after a deadline extension for payments expired last Friday.

Education Minister Daryll Matthew responded, saying all required documentation had been submitted on time and emphasising that payment processing is not under his ministry’s control.

The union is demanding payment for allowances in three categories: Technical Vocational Disciplines, Travel and Telephone Allowances for school leaders, and Ex Gratia Payments for Heads of Department.

The protest has caused significant disruption at schools across the island.

  1. Isn’t it ironic that just coming out of Labour Day celebrations which is a celebration and a commemoration of workers right we are having this. It is regrettable that teachers still have to fight and take drastic action for what is not only theirs, but what was promised to them. It is embarrassing and troublesome that nothing here gets done until severe action is taken. At a time when our children are preparing for exams, this could not have come at a worse time. Government need to get their house in order and keep their word and commitment to the teachers. It’s hypocritical to be blowing your horns on Labour Day but treating teachers with disdain and indifference.

  2. As a parent, I fully support the teachers. They’re fighting for what they deserve. The government needs to listen.

  3. The teachers have strong representation well done. What about other public servants who have yet to be paid back pay from the same period 2018. 7 yeaes!! 7 years!! 7 years to wait for less than $3000 ?????? Lord help …….. you wicked finance minister pay people dem.money oh lord man.

  4. I stand with the teachers and ALL who the government owe. Are you Ministers of Government wicked and care nothing about people.

  5. I am waiting on holiday pay from since 2020 and back pay from 2018 five years and still waiting.
