T20 West Indies World Cup Preview

The T20 World Cup, one of, if not the biggest competitions in white ball cricket is due to start in just a few weeks’ time. For a month starting in the middle of October, cricket fans around the world will be choosing their dedicated free bet offers from the likes of oddschecker, planning their time off work and settling down to enjoy what promises to be a spectacular festival of cricket.

The tournament starts slightly earlier for Kieron Pollard’s team than he would have wished as the Windies will need to go through qualifying. That in itself is not such an issue, as they should not have any trouble reaching the tournament proper, and a handful of games to get used to the pitches could be a very good thing.

The Groups

West Indies find themselves in Qualifying Group B along with Scotland, Ireland and Zimbabwe. Their first game is against Scotland at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart on Monday 17th October, followed by matches against Zimbabwe on the 19th and Ireland on the 21st, again, both in Hobart.

If they were to top the group, Pollard and his men will find themselves up against India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa and one of probably either Namibia or the UAE. Coming second in their group would put them in Group 1, which would see them face England, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan and more than likely Sri Lanka.

The Venues

The tournament is taking place in Australia, the first time it has been held in that continent. It is the last time we will see this format, with future years – the 2024 tournament being in the West Indies of course – consisting of 20 teams. There may be a large amount of travel for teams and fans alike, with the sheer size of Australia, but that is more than made up for by the nation’s love of the sport, and its iconic stadiums. There are seven host grounds, namely the MCG (with a capacity of more than 100,000 there is no better venue for the final); the SGC (host of the first semi-final); the Adelaide Oval (host of the second semi-final); The Gabba in Brisbane; Perth Stadium, Geelong’s Kardinia Park and the place where it all kicks off for the West Indies, the Oval in Hobart.

If the West Indies do lift the trophy on the 13th of November, they will be the first country to do so three times, as they go into it as the only team to have won it twice. They will not go in as favourites, but as we all know, sport can make fools of the most knowledgeable of experts.

  1. Did the author really said Kieron Pollard’s team. This article is dated 27th July 2022. I though Pollard retired from intrenational cricket in April 2022.
