Technology Minister Melford Nicholas recently discussed a proposal for a new ride-hailing app in Antigua, emphasizing the potential benefits for both taxi operators and passengers.
The app, tentatively named (SYWFT), aims to provide a secure and efficient online platform for booking taxis.
Nicholas highlighted that the app will offer electronic financial transactions, enabling customers to pay using debit or credit cards. The app will also feature tracking capabilities similar to those seen in popular ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft.
However, unlike these international platforms, Swift will be exclusive to registered taxi drivers, ensuring that they maintain control over the market.
The proposal has already gained support from at least one taxi association leader, who noted that the app could address security concerns, especially for female passengers. The cabinet has endorsed the initiative, encouraging continued consultation with the taxi fraternity to ensure broad agreement.
Nicholas also pointed out the increasing demand for digital services among young people, referencing the success of the locally developed Almart app, which facilitates the delivery of packaged lunches. He expressed optimism that the government will catch up with this trend, aiming to offer more online services in the future.
In addition, Nicholas mentioned plans to develop a similar app for the bus service, allowing users to track buses in real-time, enhancing security and convenience for passengers.
Overall, the minister views this development as a positive step towards modernizing Antigua’s transportation sector and meeting the digital needs of its citizens.
