Syrian Community Calls Meeting with Government Officials to Address Rising Crime and Business Threats

17

The Syrian community, still in a state of shock following the tragic shooting death of one of their members, has arranged a meeting with government officials to address the escalating crime situation and the increasing threat faced by local businesses.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday night, May 23, at 8 p.m., at the Orthodox Church located within the Antigua Syrian Club grounds in Langfords.

The Honorary Syrian Consul is organizing the gathering on behalf of the Syrian community.

Attorney-General and Minister of Public Safety and Legal Affairs, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin; Tourism Minister and Rural North MP, Charles “Max” Fernandez; and Minister of Education, Daryl Matthew, are expected to be in attendance.

These government representatives will also address the family members of the recent homicide victim, 25-year-old Roudi Shmaly, who resided in Utopia Place, Sir George Walter Highway, as well as the broader Syrian community.

Shmaly was fatally shot during a robbery at the Pick n Mix Mart on DeSouza Road on Monday, May 22, around 1:10 p.m. He arrived at the hospital unresponsive and was pronounced dead approximately 25 minutes later.

Reports indicate that he suffered gunshot wounds to the back and head. Allegedly, a spent 9 mm shell was discovered at the crime scene.

The police are actively seeking additional assistance in the ongoing investigation into this recent homicide. Sources suggest that at least six individuals have been detained on suspicion of murder.

The authorities urge anyone with information that can aid the investigation to contact the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at 462-3913 or call Crimestoppers at 800-Tips (8477).

  1. It’s funny how the Syrian community have easy access to police to address crime but crime is not an issue when it only affect dark skin people. The youths acting up the Syrian community never thought crime was an issue. Schools broken into and vandalized the Syrians never think crime is an issue but when it affect them is when police start working hard smh true shame.

    • Economic power speaks, bro,They have those politicians in their pockets, the Syrians practically own Antigua, just the curses of Deuteronomy 28 being fulfilled

  2. However it gets dun, it gets dun!!!

Don’t you know Jamaican rise up when one of their own is slain within their community, so do latinos and as you can see so do syrians.

When a syrian says “my brudder” to another syrian: he means it. Also, many of us have alliances with the syrian community, and have been adopted into the fold.

We Antiguans are tooooo dam silent….tooo dam selfish….tooooo dam afraid to stand up !!!!

If it takes a syrian death for duncyhead Max, arrogant Darryl and sugarcoater Cutie to shake up or shake down the current police commissioner, let the chips fall where they may!!

FED UP OF BEING AFRAID TO LEAVE MY HOUSE AT NIGHT!!!

  3. True, realistic observations. Did they request a meeting or demanded one? It’s sad but where are those voices when, as you say, other people are affected?

  4. We are really mentally enslaved!! My message is not an attempt to be racial so lets get that out of the way!! It is the reality! Its interesting that the serian community can summon the ministers after this tragedy but not have a press conference to the indigenous people of this country after the rape of the young lady, robbery of various business people!! We allow people to come here and do as they please, build anywhere they want, have their business in strategic prime location! This government is dont care about its people!! End of! It’s sad what happened to the young man but Antiguan lives do matter to!

    • Absolutely correct and well observed @ Shaking.

There have been some heinous crimes against the indigenous as well, and I’m yet to hear or witness the same impetus to thoroughly investigate, resolve or help family and local community.

      Mental slavery indeed …

    • @Shaking My Head – sadly your nom de plume seems overwhelmingly appropriate and your commentary is bang on in my opinion.

  5. The Syrian community says “jump” and de kiss ass black politicians beg “how high Sir!!”. In Antigua, Black Lives DON’T MATTER”. Shame…RIEP to the young man whose life was so tragically snuffed out.

    • @Ras Smood the Impersonator…I see you’ve returned pretending to be me. Bullets should be smashing into bitches like you who create, support and promote mayhem like criminals.
Keep eating my shit 💩💩💩one day, it’ll bury you. Typical piece of shit.

  6. Garbage chat. Just as the Syrian community is agitating for a food change so can the indigenous demand and agitate rather than staying silent on the sidelines.you are either part of the problem or the solution.

  7. This sounds very selfish. Crime was awful when it affected the rest of the Island, too. If they are so concerned about Syrians ONLY, then they should go back to Syria…

  8. They can’t. Syria is in a war..it is too dangerous to go back there. For the ones who were expelled, the government may not allow them to return. I wish they had done this differently. Violent crime on the island is something that we should all stop…not only when it affects one group of people.
