Fire Destroys Historic Family Home on Bendals Main Road
Suspicions of arson emerge as investigators probe blaze
A fire engulfed a decades-old wooden home on Bendals Main Road on Friday morning, reducing the once-familiar structure to charred debris and triggering a swift response from fire officials.
The property, owned by Vi Peterson, had remained in her family for generations. Though no longer occupied, it was being used by one of her sons to store belongings. The fire broke out mid-morning and spread rapidly, with firefighters arriving on scene shortly after receiving the alert. By the time the blaze was brought under control, the structure was largely destroyed.
Peterson, now said to be in her 70s, is a well-known figure in the community, having once operated the popular Christos Supermarket on High Street. The house, where she raised her children, had fallen into disrepair in recent years.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, some residents in the area have raised concerns that the blaze may have been deliberately set. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether foul play is suspected.
