Suriname has bestowed its highest national award on visiting Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, with President Chandrikapersad Santokhi saying that the Carrier Grand Chain of Honour of the Yellow Star is in recognition of her contribution to inclusiveness and empowerment of women.
“Good leaders possess self-awareness, empower others, focus on building relationships, remain authentic and become role models.
These qualities enable leaders to create strong connections that result in exceptional performance,” Santokhi said.
Murmu, who is India’s first tribal and second female president, is on an official three-day visit to the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country as it celebrates 150 years since the first indentured labourers from India arrived in Suriname 10 years after slavery was abolished in the former Dutch colony.
Santokhi called it a great honour to bestow the award on his Indian counterpart.
Adding that it is in “recognition of her contribution to inclusiveness and empowerment of women as she is the first tribal and second female president of the Republic of India”.
He said President Murmu’s visit not only symbolises the close historical bond between Suriname and India, but also focuses on gratitude and respect for the ancestors, and for their dedication and strength for the unknown.
“Your Excellency, continue your work to bring our nations and peoples together and ultimately contribute to lasting peace and development,” he said during the ceremony held at the National Palace.
