Supreme Court declines to hear appeal from singer R. Kelly, convicted of child sex crimes

(AP) — The Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal Monday from the singer R. Kelly, who is now serving 20 years in prison after being convicted of child sex convictions in Chicago.

The Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, was found guilty in 2022 of three charges of producing child sexual abuse images and three charges of enticement of minors for sex.

His lawyers argued that a shorter statute of limitations on child sex crime prosecutions should have applied to offenses dating back to the 1990s. Current law permits charges while an accuser is still alive.

The justices did not detail their reasoning in declining to hear the case, as is typical. And none publicly dissented. Lower courts previously rejected his arguments.

Federal prosecutors have said the video showed Kelly abusing a girl. The accuser identified only as Jane testified that she was 14 when the video was taken.

Kelly has also appealed a separate 30-year sentence for federal racketeering and sex trafficking convictions in New York.

  1. This is un-Justice of the US Legal System why I do not understand that people here think that their system is better then ours. We here are fortunate enough that we can take our case all the way to the Privy Council or the CCJ depending on the jurisdiction and whether or not we have the money to so do. Many especially black people on death row have been denied their case being heard for no specific reason whatsoever. Allen Stanford was denied every possible opportunity to get his case heard by the appeals courts. Let alone by the Supreme Court. I detest the system where you are denied justice without given proper reason. In fact their should be no denial for anyone to take their case to the highest court. It is for judges to look into the case once again with usually more legal arguments being made or more evidence coming out. Sometime you have people having spend the majority of their life in jail only to be finally heard by the Supreme Court and having their conviction overturned. Our system is a much better system. It does have some flaws as no system is perfect, but it seems that in the USA you are guilty until you can proof your innocence. I guess R. Kelly will have to sit out his sentence and so will Diddy. Like Bill Cosby.
But you think Trump will ever see the inside of a jail? Don’t hold your breath. They US Supreme Court Judges are already looking at way to avoid that from ever happing. As they have already declared he is Immune from prosecution. And yet they say, No one is above the LAW. As they do not have a King.

  2. Yep, I notice that with the whole USA that you are guilty until proven innocent. Look at Diddy situation, no case has been called but everyone has already judged him.

What does it mean to be convicted of a felony?
In the United States, where the felony–misdemeanor distinction is still widely applied, the federal government defines a felony as a crime punishable by death or imprisonment in excess of one year. If punishable by exactly one year or less, it is classified as a misdemeanor.
