Supervisor of Elections Lorna Simon has said that the main opposition United Progressive Party will have to wait in line if it wants an electronic copy of the Register of Electors.
On Saturday, the UPP wrote to Simon and chairman of the Antigua Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) concerned that the Register for Elections “may very well have been published in error and may not be the list upon which the elections may be held.”
The UPP also expressed concern that it was unable to get an electronic copy of the list because
“we have learnt that the Commission is in the process of preparing the List for Elections.”
However, in same day response, Simon informs the main opposition party that its assertions are erroneous.
She said the election will be contested on only one list which was published on March 13th in accordance with the Representation of the People Act.
Simon informed the UPP that they are not a priority when it comes to distribution of the list.
“You have completely misunderstood or misconstrued the reason for the delay in obtaining the electronic copy of the register for elections,” she wrote.
“As you should appreciate ABEC’s first priority is to ensure that all 172 polling stations are provided with copies of both lists on election day,” Simon added.
She said her office must also arrange for the lists to be given to a number of key election workers.
“It is for this reason that no electronic copies of the Register for Elections has been distributed to any political party,” the Supervisor of Elections said.
She promised to list by March 19 or sooner.

Praying for my country….
Claims and objection period? Where this election is concerned the last day for that was early march. Names of persons registered in Jan were displayed in public for the required 31 days. If persons were not objected to, they made the final list for the 2018 elections
Now isn’t this a sinister move to refuse to provide the document whereby the people could be challenged? How can she not know how to send an email? How can OUR election be free and fair when parties are being deliberately sidelines/sideswiped/maligned by the very body that supposed to be bipartisan? Guess this is the Antiguan Democracy in action.

Are we headed to a repeat of the 2009 election? If an electronic list is available, why the delay in distributing it to all parties contesting the elections? In this modern era of polling and data analysis, why is the distribution of this electronic list not a priority? Aren’t we talking about a few key strokes to a send the files to a Dropbox? ABEC needs to get with modern times.
