Supermarkets can now open Easter Sunday and Monday

Supermarkets will now be allowed to open on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday but will remain closed on Good Friday.

In regulations published this week, the government had said “no business activity or service not listed in the Schedule to the Essential Services Act, 2008 shall be permitted to open or operate on Friday 10th April, 2020 (Good Friday), Sunday 12th April, 2020 (Easter Sunday) and Monday 13th April, 2020 (Easter Monday).”

However, Attorney General, Steadroy Benjamin told state media Cabinet met today and decided to amend the regulations “because of the length of the lines at the different supermarkets and to prevent any action from being taken to cause a havoc in the nation”.

“It was agreed that Friday, all supermarkets will be closed, that’s the normal situation anyway, it’s in the law, but during the curfew period now, which exists, we will open from 7 to 12 on Sunday and Monday. So, things go back to normal under the curfew. On Sunday and Monday supermarkets will be opened”, he said.

The Attorney General also reminded that there will be no Easter Monday picnics this year.

“No beach-going at all on Easter Monday, stay home with your family and enjoy your family, enjoy being together, build that bond of love among us all and if you wish to travel, make certain that you have a pass because if you don’t have a curfew pass, you will be dealt with”, he cautioned.

The Attorney General said, under the new regulations, “children are allowed to be outside in the presence or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.”

“Remember the social distancing, wash your hands carefully with soap for 20 seconds or use a sanitizer and remember at all times, wear your masks outside of the presence of your home”, he added.

    • You mean a self indulgent businessmen who pick up the phone and call their sponsored politician to impose their will. When have you ever seen this government bend to the will of the people?

  1. Easter is always on a Sunday. There is no such thing as Easter Sunday.Where I am living nothing is opened on Easter. You are telling me that the people cannot go one day without shopping. They have from Sundays to Saturdays for 5 hours per day to shop now.So why the darn greedy Administration and Supermarkets cannot closed for one day,Easter. The Holiest of Days for Christians around the world. Is the ABST worth more than our religious beliefs as Christians? Not judging anyone, just asking.

    • Not because they are open means you have to go to them just stay home. People have different needs at different times. You might be ok others may not be ok with the long closure

      • Ibaba: What long closure are you referring to.The Supermarkets are opened every day of the week from 7 am to 12 noon. They could close for one day,Easter.

  2. The government will never learn. The more u close things down the more u stand a chance of the spread. From last week to now. U can just say hey tomor the curfew start say it 5 days in advance. Wait ar u blind. It draws a crowd when u do things like this.

  3. Today some people who went to the supermarket at 7a.m had to wait for 3 hours to get in. The people who went at 9 could not get in at all, due to too many people in 5 hours opening hours. It’s the problem that you end up standing in line for hours just to get in.

  4. People need to utilize the village shops. Some of these village shops have most of what supermarket has with the exception of broccoli, cabbage, carrot, celery, apples, grapes, plums, strawberries, etc… just to name few items that you won’t find in the village shops.
