September 7, 2025, St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda…………… The Wadadli Initiative

for Self-Care and Healing (WISH) reaffirms its position on mental health awareness and

advocacy during Suicide Prevention Month observed during September.

WISH continues to shed light on the critical issues including the need for a national

response to ensure that the most vulnerable have access to affordable healthcare which

includes mental health services such as counselling and therapy.

New data released from the World Health Organization claims that over one billion people

worldwide suffer from depression. This disorder is characterized by feelings of

hopelessness, lack of sleep, poor concentration, changes in appetite and thoughts of

self-harm.

According to the WHO, suicide continues to be a “devastating” outcome of untreated

depression which shatters families and communities across Antigua and Barbuda and the

wider Caribbean region.

WISH assures its partners and supporters that those suffering from unseen illness will have

a voice through the organization. Know that you are not alone as we fight for your right to

live and heal.
