Students Celebrate Youth Day at the Art & Cultural Village at Julees

More than 80 students from seven schools across Antigua and Barbuda gathered at the Art & Cultural Village at Julees to celebrate Youth Day—an energetic, art-filled experience designed to spark creativity and national pride.

Julees’ parking lot was transformed into “Art Alley,” bursting with vibrant chalk designs depicting national pride. The event also aligned with World Illustration Day (November 28), making it a perfect celebration of youth creativity, visual expression and artistic storytelling.

Students also explored the dynamic Art Exhibition, which features nearly 100 pieces from local and regional artists. Several teams participated in the Youth Chalk Art Contest in “Art Alley,” creating stunning illustrations that will become part of the colorful “welcome mat” greeting patrons throughout Art Week—an inspiring tribute to young illustrators on their special day.

The student activities were led by artist Odessa Whitlock, an aspiring art teacher based in New Jersey who returned to Antigua to participate in Art Week and help nurture young creative talent.

“Having attended elementary school in Antigua — Kids Unlimited — I am happy for the opportunity to help inspire the next generation of artists,” Whitlock shared. She emphasized the importance of mentorship and creating supportive environments where young people can explore and develop their artistic gifts.

The Art & Cultural Village is one of the signature venues for Antigua and Barbuda Art Week 2025, featuring more than 25 visual artists and artisans. Alongside the expansive exhibition, the Village also showcases culinary creators who bring the flavors of Antigua and Barbuda to life.

Youth Day at Julees not only highlighted the talent and imagination of young participants but also underscored the Village’s mission: to create a dynamic, inclusive space where color, culture, and creativity collide—now and for generations to come.
