Violent crime has surged across the nation in the past two months, causing widespread concern among residents and prompting urgent action from public officials.
Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but reassured the public that progress is being made. He noted that many of those involved in these crimes have been arrested and brought to court, with more arrests expected soon.
The police, working with various agencies, are focused on restoring safety. The government has invested in additional resources for the police and Defense Forces, resulting in increased patrols and intelligence operations, both visible and covert.
The Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force (ABDF) has played a key role in supporting the police. Brigadier Telbert Benjamin, Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized the importance of this ongoing partnership, which ensures a continuous law enforcement presence across the nation.
A troubling trend is the high rate of repeat offenders. Superintendent Lisbourne Michael reported that, of the 850 people arrested and charged in 2023, 474 were repeat offenders, mostly young individuals aged 15 to 25.
In response, the government is considering legal reforms to make it harder for individuals accused of certain violent crimes to secure bail. These proposed changes will be discussed in the House of Representatives later this week.

It hurts my heart to learn that in Antigua a twelve year old has given birth. Where the hell are the parents? And who has impregnated this child. What has the police or the court to him. Does he still has his balls? I don’t care about his mental illness. He should be castrated. And the sad thing is that these European countries want to dictate to us how we should treat our prisoners and we should abolish the death penalty. Give me a F–Kng break. Where is our independence to run our own affairs as we see fit. As a community we are entitle to have our own laws. And the rest of the world should respect us. No one tells them how to live their lives. And what laws they should and should not pass. Freedom and independence, don’t really mean shit in the end when others dictate how you should eat drink and shit. If you do not do as they say oh boy they bring out the bully pulpit. Black Listing, No loans, no corresponding banking. You name it. What a disgusting world are we living in. The power is in the hands of a few.
We want our meeting with the PM cuz we sick of living in hell! Every day is a struggle. No village shop, noise from airplanes, man cya sleep. Road slippery after rain, constant fear of drive by from Fitches Creek…..PM where are you ??
Law and Order solutions are no solutions. the government needs to stop pocketing graft and start offering real jobs, increase the minimum wage and provide decent social services, including counselling. Any idea that “progress is being made” because the cops are locking up more people for longer is just propaganda
Is it any different from a 16 year old giving birth? These lousy pedophiles in Government are more concerned with violating the younger members of the female population than protecting them. We know who were the criminals in our Parliament at the time this bill was passed and the Criminal Party is notorious for condoning these acts; ask the female Cutie and Guyanese Little Kim. They even presided over a BRUCK FOOT INDUSTRY and it’s still thriving today. The present Pedophile is some 3 decades his wife’s senior and is said to be her Godfather. Can anything good come out of this Bunch?
