Stranded and Silenced: LIAT Trainees Speak Out on Delays, Favoritism, and Broken Promises

3

Dear Editor,

I hope this message finds you well. A former trainee who was part of LIAT’s recent Cabin Crew recruitment process wishes to share their experience, which sheds light on several challenges and frustrations encountered during this time. With the recent media attention surrounding the airline, they believe it is important to bring these issues to light for a broader understanding of the situation.

After being selected for training, the trainee and several others faced significant delays, with training frequently being put on hold for extended periods. The explanation given for these delays was that aircraft parts were “on sea,” leading to long stretches of inactivity. During this time, communication from the airline was minimal, leaving trainees uncertain about when, or if, the training would resume.

Over the course of several months, many trainees struggled financially, as they were not being paid and had little to no clarity about their future with the airline. Faced with mounting pressures, many were ultimately forced to leave the training program. The lack of financial support and clear updates made it increasingly difficult for trainees to continue, and in many cases, LIAT appeared to find arbitrary or unjustifiable reasons to allow trainees to depart.

It wasn’t until the situation gained media attention that the Human Resources Manager finally reached out to express empathy. However, trainees were informed that, due to “insufficient resources,” the airline could not offer alternative roles or support. This response came after months of waiting without communication, leaving many trainees feeling abandoned and unsupported.

In addition to these issues, trainees were reportedly encouraged to remain silent about the conditions and challenges they faced during their training. The company’s apparent request for confidentiality created an atmosphere of fear and discomfort, with trainees feeling pressured not to speak out about the unfair treatment, lack of support, or favoritism they experienced. This silencing of concerns further compounded the sense of frustration and disillusionment among the group.

Furthermore, throughout the training process, there were clear signs of favoritism, with some trainees receiving preferential treatment while others who spoke up or raised concerns were often sidelined or dismissed. This uneven treatment left many questioning the fairness and integrity of the entire process.

While it is understood that every company faces operational challenges, the lack of transparency, communication, and fairness during the recruitment and training process was a significant source of frustration for many trainees. The pressure to remain silent about these issues only added to the feeling of being disregarded by the airline.

By sharing this story, the former trainee hopes to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by applicants and encourage LIAT to reassess its approach to communication, transparency, and employee support in the future. Transparency, fairness, and an open, supportive environment are essential for fostering trust and ensuring a positive experience for all involved.

Thank you for considering this account. It is hoped that it will contribute to a meaningful conversation about how the airline can improve its recruitment practices and its treatment of prospective employees.

Sincerely,
[Former Trainee, Anonymized]

  1. Awwww u got your little feelings hurt??? Just because you got a job interview and training doesn’t mean that you are ENTITLED to be picked.

Welcome to the real world. You think life is a bed of roses eh?

  2. You sound like you, not only lack reading comprehension skills, but also have a small willy.
The trainee clearly stated that there was NO JOB and that’s why they were upset because the airline had them in limbo for months, unpaid after recruiting them knowing they were not prepared.
Instead of bringing them along, they could have just waited until they knew for sure they had the resources to hire rather than ask persons to join and then leaving them for months with no pay and no update on what the future could hold. Learn to read or STFU.

  3. Not sure if that’s what was meant in the article, @Rovi.

The consensus seems to be that no one from the training group has been selected, and there is still no clear communication about what is happening. Might I suggest reviewing the article again before commenting? It might help clarify any misconceptions about the situation.

You sound kind of dumb. Hope this helps.
