Update on Rescued Cameroonian Nationals in St. Kitts and Nevis: Granted Asylum Seeker Status by UNHCR

11

The Ministry of National Security of St. Kitts and Nevis has provided an update on the 14 Cameroonian nationals who were rescued at sea on March 28th, 2023.

On June 8th, 2023, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) granted them “Asylum Seeker Status.”

This means they are protected from forced repatriation and entitled to humanitarian care while their asylum requests are processed by the UNHCR.

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis will continue to work closely with the UNHCR to provide necessary humanitarian services to the Cameroon nationals.

The official Asylum Seeker Certificates were delivered to them on June 10th, 2023.

As part of the arrangement, the government has decided to release them from detention and relocate them to an apartment complex for increased comfort and autonomy during the 90-day period while their asylum applications are being processed.

The Cameroon nationals have communicated three demands, which include obtaining a United Nations identification card, speaking with the United States Embassy or Congress, and being sent to their friends and family in Texas, USA, claiming special protection under US law.

The government explained that these demands are beyond its authority, except for granting access to communicate with the US Embassy, for which they have been provided with the necessary contact information.

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis will review its asylum legislation and procedures to address illegal migration.

It emphasizes that it will not tolerate becoming a safe haven for human traffickers or individuals using illegal means to enter the country’s borders.

As a sovereign nation, it is committed to upholding its immigration policies and protecting its borders.

  1. Well Well
An antiguan problem has become a kittian problem.

At least the PM there, being a Dr, will ensure that they have proper health screening, so that kittians don’t have to worry about Marburg and the like!

This disgraced Gaston Brown government has no regard for the very basic health care of Antiguan people causetheycan easilyflyouttomayo clinic. Afterall, our PM took his covid vaccine in secret, months before it became available. That alone demonstrates his nonregard for our health needs. Also the minister he chose to be in charge of the Ministry of Health don’t actually care about people, if evil had a face, it would be MOLWYN’S.

    Stand up Antiguans:
    Mental hospital needs a re-do
Allsaints clinic won’t be fixed and a parttime
    bus driver isn’t the solution
Clarehall clinic won’t be fixed and the hospital
will be flooded with persons from cassada
    gardens
Brown Avenue clinic is over-run with persons
    from every where
Johnson pt clinic will never be fixed
Bolans main road has a building that just like
the Nugent Ave building, serves no purpose
Graysfarm clinic floods because of leaks and
    it’s below sea-level
Mount StJohn needs a facelift & a mental wing
Two big polyclinics but services are limited
    Garbage remains unemptied nationally for
    weeks

Someone with compassion needs to head the Cabinet andtheHealthsystem, I pray for the day that basic basic basic health care becomes a priority in this country !!

  2. Kudos to St. Kitts government and the people of St. Kitts for not making these people feel like trash.

  3. Didn’t a certain minister received a sir accommodation?
    For what?
The health care system is in shambles!
    Pure joke…smh!!

  4. So where are findings from the UNHCR for the investigation that was conducted in Antigua weeks before St. Kitts? Did we sweep ours under the rug? Look how Gaston Browne’s recklessness has impacted our neighbours! It is very clear why he is fighting against a public inquiry. PM Dr. Terrence Drew thanks for your transparency and proactive stance in educating the public. What’s done in darkness will always come to light.

  5. One thing I know for sure that when they are released, in a matter of two weeks they all will be on route to USA illegal. Any means necessary. Most of them have left Antigua after the drowning on same size boats and same amounts. They left from Antigua to St.Maarten- St.Maarten to St. Thomas USVI and onto the US main land. So nothing St.Kitts government can do to prevent them . Secondly the same argument they are making that Antigua Government is preventing them from going to the USA as if Antigua has that authority. They go to VC Bird airport and try to purchase tickets to the USA and other destinations and when the airline agents disallow them , they say it’s Antigua that stop them. They just don’t understand that they require visas to enter most countries. They have also gone to Barbuda and left there from boat.
Our fishermen or not generally human traffickers, however they have been seen going to the the fishing areas and entice them with very profitable opportunities. 20 men to St.Maarten at $3,500.00 US each . Hey that 70,000.00 USD – very tempting, for a fisherman that goes out to sea and comes back mostly empty handed.

  6. HOW MANY OF THE GASTON BROWNE MIGRANTS ARE STILL ON ISLAND?

HOW MANY OF THE GASTON BROWNE MIGRANTS FROM NIGERIA AND OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES HAVE FRAUDULENT CAMEROONIAN PASSPORTS? How did they depart the country?

WHY NONE OF THE GASTON BROWNE MIGRANTS THAT PRESENTED FRAUDULENTLY OBTAINED PASSPORTS PROSECUTED?

WHO INSTRUCTED THE POLICE NOT TO INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE THE IMPOSTERS?

HOW WILL THE AUTHORITIES THAT PROVIDED RESIDENCY TO THE GASTON BROWNE MIGRANTS KNOW THE TRUE IDENTITY OF THE IMPOSTERS?

Reasons for Royal Commission of Inquiry.

  7. “A very high number of the respondents, a total of 82 %, said they had experienced
discrimination while in Antigua. A total of 94% said they left their country of
origin due to violence related reasons and 94 % answered they fear to return to
    their country of birth/origin….”

Yes the UNHCR report here found them stating they felt discriminated against. Unlike SKN we did not keep them in detention centers and government policy in essence is to treat them like brothers and sisters. Unfortunately we have some here that unless you are white, don’t see you as human

    • @tenman.
As soon as you play the race card we know you are on shaky ground. Tell me honestly if you thought the answers given to the UNHCR by the Cameroonians would have been different. The Cameroonians are playing to the heartstrings of the UNHCR with the sole purpose of gaining sympathy for refugee status to enter the USA, their intended destination. They simply do not care how they gain entry and that includes illegally. If you think otherwise then you are as easily duped as the current administration were by Marvelous Mike and his sidekicks. I put this to you and the brothers and sisters brigade: if Marvelous Mike were to provide a fleet of Boeings to transport you and your fellow thinking community for a one way trip to Africa, I say without hesitation those airplanes would be empty, yes empty. Tell me otherwise!!

  8. Gaston Browne being protected by the TRIPARTITE of the ABLP 😈, the elites 😈 in Antigua and judiciary 😈. Wow, wow and wow!

    Dictatorship by the back door.

  9. The situation involving the Cameroonian detainees in St. Kitts calls for a comprehensive and compassionate approach. It is essential to prioritize the protection of human rights, fair treatment, and due process. By working together and adhering to international standards, we can strive to find appropriate resolutions and support those who seek refuge in our communities.
